Teacher. Let’s review your knowledge about the capital of Great Britain. Listen to me and answer the questions:
  1. Is London one of the greatest cities in the world?
  2. What is the population of London?
  3. Where is it situated?
  4. What are the main parts of London?

Teacher. When we think of Paris, Rome, Madrid, Athens and other European capitals, we think of them as “cities”. When we think of modern London with its total area several hundred square miles, we don’t think of it as “city”. Why?

P1. As far as I can judge, London is not one city. It is a number of cities such as West End, the East End, the City, and the Westminster. Each district has its own character.

Teacher. That’s right. So, London is the political, business, industrial and cultural city of Great Britain. What place does it take among the largest cities in the world.

P2. London is the world’s seventh largest city.

3.      Checking up.

Teacher. You have read some additional information preparing for today’s lesson. And now tell us some interesting facts about the City and its attractions.

P3. The city colloquially called “The Square Mile”, is the oldest and the most historic part of London. In fact it is slightly larger – about 677 acres. Today the city is one of the world’s greatest financial centers. In the heart of the City is the Bank of England, “the old lady of Thread needle Street’
The Royal Exchange, the building for insurance offices, occupies the cite, which was the centre of Roman London.
St. Paul’s cathedral, at the top of Ludgate Hill, was built of the site of the medieval church, destroyed in the Great Fire. It’s Christopher Wren’s masterpiece and one of the London’s prime attractions. St. Paul’s Cathedral is the scene of main great occasions – the funeral of Sir Winston Cherchill and the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer.

Teacher. Thank you… And what would you say about the Westminster?

P4. Westminster is one thousand years old. It is London at its grandest: the place, where kings and queens are crowned, where they lived and were buried. It’s the place, where the heart of the Empire beats. The past here is cast in stone and you take it all in ancient Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral, Buckingham, Westminster and St. James Palaces.
As during the Middle Ages London increased in size and wealth, the old city and the area round the Royal Palace at Westminster became the two chief centres. The nobles, bishops, judges and others, who were connected with the Court, lived in or near Westminster. This explains how the part of London that we now can tell the West End came into being. The Court moved to St. James’ in the 18th century and to Buckingham palace in the 19th century.

Teacher. Thanks. Next part of London is the West End. Who will tell us about this district?

P5.The West end is the richest part of London. Most of the big shops, hotels, museums, art galleries, theatres and concert halls we can find here. Piccadilly Circus is the heart of London’s West End. The special feature which distinguishes London from other capital cities is its many green parks and gardens. Five of London’s Royal parks are in the very heart of the capital. Among the most important parks that bring fresh life and colour to London are St. James’ Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens, that stretch across the West End. Each of them has its own character.

Teacher. The fourth part of London is the East End. What do you know about it?

P6. It is the industrial district of the capital. There are many plants and factories there. Working people live in the East End. It is the “hands” of London. These “hands” have built the City banks, the palaces the theatres and shop of the West End. They have built up “wealth” of Great Britain.

Teacher. Well, now we’ll listen to the dialogue, which our pupils have already prepared. It was their individual task.

Mr. Brown is an American. He arrived in London to see the sights. He is worth a tourist agent

-          Good afternoon, can I help you?
-          Yes, please. I want to go on a guided excursion about the city.
-          Yes of course. Where do you want to go?
-          Well this is a problem. I’ve never been to London before.
-          That’s all right. You may see Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral and much more of London from a red double-decker.
-          Where does the double-decker’ stop?
-          They start an excursion from a Trafalgar Square.
-          Thank you very much.
-          You are welcome.

4.      Speaking London Sightseeing Tour.

Teacher. We have got a group of guides. They’ll help us to visit the sights of London. You may ask some questions.

P8. I’d like to know about the main residence of the last Queen Elizabeth II, which was the residence of many other queens and kings. What is it?

P9. It is Buckingham palace. It’s the British monarch’s main residence in London. It was built in 1703. The royal standard, flying above the east front of the palace, indicates that the monarch is in the residence. The daily Changing of the Guard at Buckingham palace is one of the London’s most important tourist attractions.

P10. I want to add. There are two addresses in London what the whole word knows. One is 10 Downing Street, where the prime minister lives. The other is Buckingham Palace. This famous palace, first built in 1703, is in the very centre of London. It is two places not one. It’s a family house, where children play and grow up. It is also a place, where presidents, kings and politicians go to meet the Queen. Buckingham Palace is like a small town, with a police station, two post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sport clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming-pool.

P3. Sorry, how many rooms are there in the Buckingham Palace, I wonder?

P11. There are 600 rooms and three miles of red carpet there. Two men work full–time to look after 300 clocks. About 700 people work in the Palace.
Every day at 11.30 a.m. you can see the Changing of the Guard. Once a year on the first or second Saturday of the June Londoners celebrate the official birthday of the Queen. On this day the parade is held. Thousands of Londoners and tourists cone there to see Queen’s troops in full dress, The Queen and her family.

P6. What is the Tower of London?

P12. It is one of the most ancient buildings in London. The Tower of London was built more than 900 years ago by William the Conqueror to protect and control the city. In the past it was a fortress, a palace and a state prison. Many kings live there until the 17th century, when it became a prison. Now it is a museum, which houses the Crown Jewels and other treasures. About two million people visit it every year.

P13. I’d like to add. There are six ravens in the Tower of London. They have names, live in their own cages and get money every month. There is a legend that if ravens leave the Tower, the tower and the British Monarch will fall.

P1. Is Westminster Abbey only a Church?

P14. Westminster Abbey is Royal church where most British monarchs since William the Conqueror
Have been crowned and buried. It was built in 1065. Monuments to great figures o in many fields of culture and science such as Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin are found there. Men of Letters have their own section called the Poet’s Corner.
Westminster Abbey is a fine Gothic building, famous for its architecture and historical associations, royal weddings, funerals and memorial services of great people. There is the Tomb to the Unknown Soldier who represents all these fallen during World War I.

P15. This is the Houses of Parliament. They were built in 1860. The present Houses of Parliament occupy the site of the palace and hence received the name of the palace of Westminster. The palace has more than 1000 rooms. When parliament is sitting the national flag flies from the Victoria Tower and a light shines by night. The houses of Parliament contain the universal symbol of London – Big Ben. This is the name of 13-tons bell on which the hours are struck. The bell and the clock are on the Clock Tower of the houses of Parliament. The Clock Tower is 97 meters tall. It has a large clock – each of the four deals in 97 meters in diameter. It is bell, big Ben, installed in 1858 and so named after Benjamin Hall, the chief Supervisor of the works. Big Ben sounds the houses and Quarters.

P4. What is there on Trafalgar Square?

P16. Trafalgar Square was so named in 1830 in honor to commemorate the victory of the British Navy over Napoleon in the sea battle at Trafalgar in 1805. The British fleet was commanded by Admiral Nelson who was killed in this battle. The monument in the centre of the square, known as Nelson’s Column, was erected in 1843. It’s pedestal is decorated with four bronze bas-relief of Nelson’s famous naval victories. The metal for this bas-relief was made from cannons captured from France. The statue of Admiral Nelson faces the sea ha loved. The column is surrounded by four bronze lions. The two beautiful fountains were added later. The Trafalgar Square is the traditional place3 for mass meetings.

P5. What would you say about St. Paul’s Cathedral?

P17. St. Paul’s Cathedral was built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1675–1710. It is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. It took Wren 35 years to build it. Major ceremonial functions took place here, among then the funerals of Admiral Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill, as well as the Silver Jubilee Service for Elizabeth II and the wedding of the Prince of Wales. Sir Christopher Wren who devoted his life to the creation masterpieces including this cathedral is also buried here.

P7. Tell us about Piccadilly Circus, please.

P18. Piccadilly Circus is one of the busiest traffic junctions in London. It’s surrounded by many distinguished 19th 20th century buildings and garish advertising signs. In the middle of Piccadilly Circus is cast aluminum Angel of Christian Charity. There is also a large underground station here. Piccadilly is on of the five thoroughfares that radiate from the circus is said to have derived its mane, first applied sarcastically in 1623, from its proximity to the estate of a tailor, who made a fortune out of selling “pichadills”, or collars

P19 Yes it has problems with traffic and pollution. It’s “smog”.

P8. What is “smog”?

P19. Smog is a mixture of smoke and fog.

English Homes
Some English families live in flats, but lots of people have got their own houses. There are two floors in a traditional English house. Two or three bedrooms and a bathroom are upstairs. The living-room, the dining-room is usually a favourite in the house. There is often a carpet on the floor. It makes the room comfortable. The British people usually have a fireplace in the living-room. They sometimes call this room a sitting-room because they often spend evenings in armchairs near the fireplace. They read books, watch TV, listen to music or sit around and talk. People in Britain like their homes and often say, “There is no place like home” or “East or West, home is best”.
